The Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power generation plant commences operation in September. Al Zarqa Power Plant is located in the decommissioned Hussein Thermal Power Station (HTPS) to the North East of the capital, Amman.

Replacing the inefficient heavy fuel oil (HFO) plant with a gas-fired power plant is believed to boost the sustainability of Jordan’s power supply. With a capacity of 485 Megawatt, Al Zarqa Power Plant will generate about 3.2 TWh of electricity every year, enough to supply 620,000 residential customerswith power.

Al Zarqa Power Plant holds a social and environmental significance. The plant will use natural gas a primary fuel and light distillate oil (LDO) as an alternative fuel. With gas being considered a low-carbon fuel, this plant will help reduce Jordan’s greenhouse gases emissions. Moreover, it enhances the local community by creating 589 jobs.

Kingdom Electricity for Energy Investments has acquired shares in Al Zarqa Power Plant in 2017. The project was backed by international funders including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and others.

As of September 2018, the plant started generating electricity and selling it to the National Electricity Power Company (NEPCO) under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA). NEPCO provides Al Zarqa Power Plant with natural gas through a newly built gas pipeline.
